Vietnam’s Longan Season Harvest Busy

Longan, as a light and heat loving crop, is mainly grown in subtropical and tropical regions. The main planting areas of longan in Vietnam include Xing’an, Shanluo, Haiyang and other provinces in northern Northern Vietnam. According to the statistics of the Vietnamese Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, in 2021, China was the largest export market for Vietnamese fruits, accounting for 64.7% of Vietnam’s total fruit exports. Among the nine exported fruits, longan and dried longan fruits were included. According to statistics from the Vietnamese Ministry of Industry and Trade, Vietnam is expected to sell over 4500 tons of longan to the Chinese market in 2022. With the steady increase in export volume, local fruit farmers have also embarked on the path of becoming rich in international cooperation.

Pei Chundan is a grower of longan in Khingan Province in northern Northern Vietnam. Every July to September is the local harvest season of longan. When reporters visited his orchard a few days ago, they saw a busy harvest scene. Pei Chundan said that since 2000, he and dozens of nearby villagers have started planting longan. Both Chinese and Vietnamese people have a traditional habit of consuming longan as a daily health product, so the consumption of longan is very considerable. “As far as the dried longan exported to China is concerned, a dozen or so orchards nearby can export 500 to 700 tons of finished products to China every year, with an average annual income of 1.7 billion Vietnamese đồng (about 500000 yuan) per orchard.”

Longan grown in Khingan Province, Vietnam, is thick in flesh, small in kernel and sweet in fruit. While widely favored by Vietnamese consumers, it is also sold to dozens of countries and regions, including China. Currently, there are over 5000 hectares of longan orchards in Xing’an Province. According to the report of the People’s Committee of Khingan Province in Vietnam, the production of longan in Khingan Province is expected to reach 45000 tons in 2022, of which about 35% will be processed into dried longan and mainly sold to the Chinese market.

Chen Wenci, Deputy Director of the Business Office of the People’s Committee of Hưng Yên City, Khingan Province, Vietnam, said that China is a big market that cannot be ignored. The local government is actively exploring to improve the quality of longan. Through offline and e-commerce promotion models, the local longan can become more competitive and famous in the international market. Chen Wenci also hopes to attract more foreign tourists to Vietnam to participate in ecotourism projects in the future.

By planting longan and expanding exports to China, the lives of Vietnamese fruit farmers such as Pei Chundan have been improved. They also look forward to more Vietnamese agricultural products entering the Chinese market in the future.
